Q3 Market Review: A Long-Term Lens on Short-Term Events

Another quarter has come to an end as we head to finish out the rest of 2023. As always, we review the market changes that have occurred, knowing that there will be positive and negative events. At 49 Financial, our planning process focuses on our client’s long-term financial plans, which are tailored to their individual goals and circumstances. While every client is unique, it is helpful to review how current markets may be affecting different clients.

During the past quarter, the US equity market had negative returns and didn’t perform as well as emerging markets or non-US developed markets. We also saw interest rates for all bond maturities in the US Treasury market increase. The first half of 2023 marks the tenth time since 1926 that value stocks have underperformed growth stocks by more than 20 percentage points over a two-quarter period. These events are each significant and will affect clients differently, depending on factors such as age, progress towards goals and other considerations.*

Market changes can raise questions about your finances, including investments, retirement, tax planning, and more. We’ve created a Q3 Market Review resource that covers various categories. The text is simple, direct, and organized logically to ensure clarity. The resource includes the following and more:

  • Market Summary
  • US Stocks
  • Emerging Market Stocks
  • Fixed Income
  • Quarterly Topic
